Happy October!
Greetings from all of us here at Fresh Start Farms, and happy October! With the cooler temperatures and turning of the leaves, Mother Nature dictates that we start to plan for the winter (however reluctant we may be to do so!)… but planning can be very exciting. We are energized by the projects we will be working on this fall and winter, including the Healthy Corners Initiative, Farm to School Pizza Project, and continuing our farmshare and wholesale activities. We are also looking ahead to Indigenous Peoples Day on October 10th–read below for the schedule changes during that holiday week.
In other news, have you read about Batulo’s participation in the Concord Multicultural Festival? Batulo is part of the Umoja Farmers group and has participated in the Concord Multicultural festival for several years now, sharing her famous meat pies so that people can get at taste of her Somali culture. We are so happy for her, and grateful for the work that she–and all of the other farmers–do to provide for the community. Read the full article from the Concord Monitor here. (See photos below of Batulo and four of her twelve children)
Check out the progress on the greenhouses at the new Concord Farm site!
Progress is being made on the greenhouses at the new Concord farm site off of Silk Farm Road! (see above) Our NASAP Farm Manager Jed, volunteer Emma, as well as the farmers themselves (and their families!) can be found busy at work building these greenhouses–rain or shine. There will also be some new neighbors soon: a herd of cows from Miles Smith Farm will be moving in for the fall and winter! They will help to create a more well-rounded, nutrient-rich ecosystem–yay for cow friends!
