Welcome to the 2023 Summer FarmShare!
Welcome to week 1 of your Summer FarmShare! As a Fresh Start FarmShare member, you are supporting new American farmers’ businesses, investing in the local food system, and contributing to Fresh Start’s efforts to ensure everyone has access to fresh and healthy food. Thank you!
You should have just received an email with the subject “Time to customize your farm share.” It details the current contents of your box, which are based on the preferences you have set and what is seasonally available.
- Regardless of whether you are picking up or having your Share delivered, EVERYONE will have until midnight on Tuesdays to customize their Share
- *PLEASE NOTE MEMORIAL DAY CHANGES*: For deliveries during the week of May 29th, you will receive your customization email on Friday, May 26th and will have until the following Monday (5/29) at midnight to customize your share. During the holiday week, you may see some substitutions in your FarmShare since the amounts of crops available will be estimated on Friday and might be off a bit by the harvest on Tuesday. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding!
There are lots of delicious local foods to choose from this week! Learn more about customization here. If you have any questions, please reach out to us by replying to your emails, or directly at [email protected] or 603 606 2663.
Please note that Harvie is the online platform we use to manage the FarmShare, but they are not affiliated with Fresh Start Farms. The Harvie team helps with customer support/member issues, particularly on the weekends when we aren’t open. Any questions you send to Harvie will be forwarded to us, but also please feel free to reach out directly to Fresh Start staff.
If you're new here, Welcome!
- Fresh Start Farms is a collective brand for immigrant and refugee farmers growing food in central NH through a program of the Organization for Refugee and Immigrant Success (ORIS). Forty-eight farmers grow on 23 acres across 4 farm sites in Concord, Dunbarton, and Boscawen. 25 farmers participate in markets and the remainder are community gardeners and grow only for themselves and family. Meet your farmers here.
In 2020 Fresh Start Farms opened the Food Hub in Manchester. In addition to the FarmShare, a number of programs operate out of the Hub and you’ll hear more about each of them throughout the season.
So what’s been going on this spring? Good question!
- The farmers have been working very hard to prepare their fields, buy and plant seeds, and plan for the growing season ahead.
- We’ve been working on the farms to repair fences and high tunnels, build a walk-in cooler, construct a wash station, and more. We even had an ORIS all-staff meeting at the Dunbarton farm to get all hands on deck!
- We have also been improving and expanding the Fresh Choice Manchester Program, which now has 7 participating corner stores!
- Our Food Access Manager and Coordinator have been working hard to get ready for the start of the Mobile Market, beginning next Wednesday 5/24! Find the schedule and read about the market here.
- We are continuing our partnership with the Center for New Americans to provide veggie boxes to families in the area, as well as developing a contract with the NH Food Bank for the summer.
- PLANNING–lots and lot and LOTS of planning has occurred to ensure a wonderful summer FarmShare season.

Recipes
of the Week
Utilize the fresh asparagus in your Share this week to make this recipe!
This lightly creamy asparagus soup is bright with lemon and packed with herbs and veggies. It’s the perfect fresh meal for a cool spring night. Fresh basil makes it aromatic and refreshing, peas lend it a subtle sweetness, and blended potato makes it lightly creamy without any heavy cream. Serve it as a starter with dinner, or enjoy it for lunch with a thick slice of crusty bread.
Roasted Butternut Squash & Pear Quinoa Salad
This roasted vegetable and fruit salad gets infused with flavor from quinoa that’s cooked with fresh ginger, garlic and a hit of turmeric. Serve it alongside a roast chicken, then mix the leftovers together for lunch. Your future self will thank you.
