Greetings from Fresh Start Farms!

Happy Friday! This week you’re receiving next week’s newsletter and customization email today in order for farmers and staff to observe the holiday on Monday. You will have until the normal time (Tuesday at 2pm) to make changes to your share. Deliveries and pickups will operate on the normal schedule. This week, you may see some substitutions in your FarmShare since the amounts of crops available were estimated today and might be off a bit by the harvest next week. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding!

No frost yet means that you still get to enjoy eggplant (Asian, Italian, & graffiti this week), all types of peppers (green, sweet, & hot), herbs, tomatoes, and green beans. Get them while you can!

Dinner’s ready! Terra Cotta Pasta Co.’s new Basil Pesto Sauce and Sundried Tomato & Black Olive Pesto Sauce coupled with Valicenti Fresh Pasta, Fresh Start veggies, and VT Salumi’s sausages make for a quick, delicious, and all-local meal. Plus, all sausages this week are on sale for just $7!

Farmers Apply for New Greenhouses!

Working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Dunbarton and Concord farmers cumulatively applied for funding from the USDA to build 15 greenhouses across both farms.

Greenhouses provide the farmers with numerous new opportunities for their farms. Greenhouses would allow for farmers to extend their season and they could grow things like greens and tomatoes earlier and later into the season. Farmers could grow their own seedlings as opposed to purchasing them from other farms. And they could start growing new exciting crops like sweet potatoes, ginger, turmeric, saffron, and off-season strawberries. We hope the greenhouses are funded and can be built next year!

Fresh Veggie Boxes for Manchester Housing Residents

Thanks to funding from New Hampshire Children’s Health Foundation and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, Fresh Start Farms has partnered with Manchester Housing to distribute free fresh food to the community for the fall.

Fresh Start Farms will build 100 boxes of local vegetables and fruit to be delivered to seniors and families in three Manchester Housing facilities each week. Our goal is to deliver 1200 boxes before the end of the year! We’re excited to share the fall bounty with the community!

Recipes

of the Week

Dunbarton Farmer, Isho, uses a variety of veggies from her farm to make her family of 13 a delicious vegetable and beef stir fry.

Ingredients:

  • Beef (cubed stirfry beef – flank/skirt/sirloin/rump)
  • Swiss Chard
  • Tomatoes
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Cilantro
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Fresh Cumin
  • Oil
  • Cooked White Rice

Isho stir-fries all of the ingredients in a hot pan with oil and seasons with salt and pepper. Then she uses a mortor and pestle to grind fresh cumin to add to the mix. She serves the stir-fry over white rice with fresh cilantro on top. Yum!

Brewer’s Crackers – Sea Salt & Rosmary Pita Chips

Brewer’s Crackers is an Up-Cycled cracker company in Somerville MA driven to reduce food waste in craft brewing industry (US Breweries in the US produce over 1 billion tons of edible food waste each year that ends up in our landfills!)

They make their chips using Up-Cycled brewery grains, a valuable byproduct from the beer-making process. When making beer, brewers steep super high-quality grains, like barley, in water. They then strain this mixture, keeping the liquid to make beer and discard the “spent” grains. Turns out, these grains are still incredibly flavorful and nutritious. They recycle these saved grains into crackers & pita chips. They pair perfectly with Dips, Cheese, Soup, Salad or just to snack on.

Yolo Snacks Popcorn is a party in a bag! Made in Vermont, this popcorn comes in 4 flavors: Original (made with nutritional yeast, dried dill and buttermilk), White Cheddar, Maple, and Keepin it Sea Salt.  A delicious and local snack!

Don’t forget some Fresh Apple Cider (in pints and half gallons) from Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, NH. Apple cider isn’t just for drinking, try one of these creative uses — in salad dressing, oatmeal, soup, smoothies, baked chicken, fall cocktails, even pancakes!

Dairy Items

Plymouth’s Sage & Herb Cheese is enhanced with a mellow blend of herbs de provence—including sage, thyme, rosemary, lavender, and oregano—this sixty-day recipe is a favorite during the holidays. Both feisty and familiar, this whimsical flavor finds its groove on a sandwich, paired with fruit, or perfect its own.

Founded in 1890, Plymouth is a family-run cheese factory in Vermont. They use only the finest, pasture-raised raw cow’s milk — free of additives, antibiotics and rBST — sourced from a single dairy herd from a sustainable, seventh-generation family farm 40 minutes up the road.

From the northern reaches of France comes the origin of our Coulommiers-style cheese and thicker ancestor to Brie, and the name itself, Lillé. Handmade in small batches, each wheel is a slightly different weight. Aged in its own special room, and lovingly turned regularly, the delicate rind develops evenly with a white downy bloom. This decadently sumptuous soft-ripened cheese has a supple paste core enveloped by a rich creamy body and reveals a subtle mushroom nuance with notes of nut and butter. The rind gives a nice salty bite versus the delicate interior.

Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company gently cares for their land (in South Woodstock VT) and the lives of their animals to make fresh, quality, and artisan cheese available to all.
